This course prepares you to teach beginning hatha yoga and will enrich and deepen your practice. The course explores the vast field of yogic philosophy while emphasizing asana principles and teaching techniques. Areas of study include the history, theory and practice of yoga, pranayama, meditation, professional skills, subtle body anatomy and Ayurvedic principles as they apply to yoga practices.
People are discovering yoga for its far-reaching benefits and life-enhancing possibilities. While yoga is thousands of years old, its popularity in the West is still rapidly growing. The need for qualified yoga instructors is great. Virtually all health clubs, resorts and healing centers offer yoga, while corporations, schools and other organizations are including yoga in their wellness programs.

Course Descriptions
Asana
This class includes theory, application and practice of all categories of asana: standing, seated, balancing, forward bending, inverted and twisting postures. Variations, modifications, benefits, contraindications, sequencing, therapeutic and special needs adaptations are covered.
Pranayama
Traditional basic forms of pranayama are be presented. Included are applications, benefits, contraindications, and integration of breath practices with asana and meditation.
Meditation
Yogic meditation practices are presented to facilitate understanding and experience of meditative states. Emphasis is on students developing a regular personal practice.
Yoga Philosophy
The underlying principles of yoga philosophy and its history are presented through the study of classical yogic texts including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita. The eight limbs of ashtanga are covered along with Sanskrit terminology. Focus is on integrating the study of the ancient texts into everyday life.
Ayurveda
A survey of Ayurvedic principles as they relate to a yogic lifestyle is presented. Recognizing and balancing doshas through a variety of diagnostic techniques, along with specific balancing asanas, pranayama, and meditation methods are covered. Also included is a look at the roots of both yoga and ayurveda in Samkhya philosophy.
Physical Anatomy and Physiology
Functions of skeletal, neuromuscular, lymphatic, circulatory, respiratory, and major organ systems are covered. The relationship of asana practice with the principles of biomechanics, kinesiology, and the anatomy and physiology of breath is explored.
Subtle Body Anatomy
Subtle Body concepts of chakras, nadis and koshas will be covered through a variety of techniques including asana, pranayama, meditation, bandhas, kriyas, mudras, and mantra.
Practicum
Students are required to attend a minimum of 20 hours of approved yoga classes. They observe, practice, and in some cases assist. Students are also involved in practice teaching each other throughout the entire course. We also offer unlimited free classes from our yoga schedule to our students throughout the duration of the program.
